St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®
will be the primary charity we are raising for at SERE 2009.
This charity was chosen for a variety
of reasons:
- They accept children from
across the world and no patient ever pays.
- It’s five affiliate care
centers cover multiple regions in the Midwest, Louisiana,, Huntsville
and Tennessee.
- Their clinical research
is aligned with centers in California, producing the 1996 Nobel Prize
for Physiology or Medicine with the critical work of their Department
of Immunology.
- While the organization has
corporate sponsorship and grants, they employ 3,300 employees and operate
daily at 1.4 million dollars, primarily covered by public contributions.
- Research efforts are directed
at understanding the molecular, genetic and chemical bases of catastrophic
diseases in children; identifying cures for such diseases; and promoting
their prevention. Research is focused specifically on cancers, some
acquired and inherited immunodeficiencies, sickle cell disease, infectious
diseases and genetic disorders. This work not only saves the lives of
children, but the research is put towards adults as well, and has provided
key steps in the fight against cancers, MS and organ failure infections.
In the World of Darkness, the default
setting is greed and power and the weak and the sick are left behind.
We can game there and feel a victory beating those odds, but isn’t
it more satisfying to beat them in real life too? Choose any of our
SERE 2009 Charity events to enjoy and you’re helping us get closer
to a final victory over cancer and AIDS, killers more potent (and far
less talkative) than the Strix, True Fae, Maljin or Abyss.
Say it with me. “I may play in a
World of Darkness, but I refuse to live in one.”
Enjoy your SERE and
thanks.
